If you're a UAE resident selling handmade goods on Instagram, reselling products on Amazon, or running a small home-based online business, the E-Trader license was made for you. It's the simplest, cheapest way to legalize online selling in Dubai — but it has real limitations you should know about.
Who Is the E-Trader License For?

UAE nationals and residents who sell products through social media platforms or online marketplaces. Think Instagram sellers, Etsy-type creators, home bakers, handmade jewelry makers, and small-scale resellers.

You must already have a valid UAE residence visa — the E-Trader license does NOT come with a visa. If you're on your spouse's visa or an employer's visa, you can still get an E-Trader license as a side business.

This license is issued by DET (Dubai's Department of Economy and Tourism) and is technically a simplified commercial license.

How It Compares to Other Options

E-Trader: AED 1,070/year, no office needed, home-based, no visa included. Limits: only sell on approved platforms (Instagram, Facebook, your own website). Cannot invoice B2B clients or import goods at scale.

Free zone e-commerce license (IFZA, Shams): AED 5,750-8,000/year, includes visa option, can import/export, invoice internationally. Better for serious online businesses.

DED freelancer permit: AED 7,500/year, can invoice B2B mainland, includes one visa. Better if you do services alongside product sales.

If you're just testing a product idea or running a side hustle that makes under AED 5,000/month, E-Trader is perfect. Once you need to import containers or invoice corporate clients, upgrade to a full license.

Application Process — Done in 20 Minutes

Everything happens on the DET Invest portal (invest.dubai.ae) or the Dubai Now app.

Requirements: valid Emirates ID, passport copy, photo, and link to your social media account or website where you sell.

You select your activity — options include 'perfumes trading', 'used clothes trading', 'accessories trading', 'food products trading from home', and about 20 others.

Pay AED 1,070. License issued instantly. Literally — you download the PDF right after payment. No office lease, no partner, no establishment card needed.

Limitations — Read This Before You Apply

No visa. This is the biggest one. The E-Trader license is just a permit to sell — it doesn't give you residency status.

No importing under your own name. You can't get a customs code with an E-Trader license. You need to buy from local suppliers or use a trading company to import for you.

No corporate bank account. Most banks won't open a business account for E-Trader license holders. You're expected to use personal accounts or payment gateways linked to your personal bank.

Platform restrictions. DET requires you to sell through specific digital channels. Physical shops or market stalls are not covered.

No B2B invoicing. Large companies won't accept invoices from an E-Trader license. If you're selling to businesses, get a proper commercial or professional license.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I sell food with an E-Trader license?
Yes, there's a 'food products trading from home' activity. However, you need a home kitchen permit from Dubai Municipality for any food preparation. This involves a kitchen inspection and food safety training. Selling pre-packaged food that you don't prepare yourself is simpler.
Can I hire employees on an E-Trader license?
No. The E-Trader license is a solo operation — you cannot sponsor employees or obtain work permits through it. If you need staff, you need to upgrade to a full DED or free zone license with visa allocation.
Is E-Trader available in other emirates?
Dubai's E-Trader is the most established. Abu Dhabi has a similar home-based business permit through ADDED. Sharjah and other emirates have their own versions but they're less streamlined. The Dubai E-Trader license is the fastest and cheapest option.
