What is a UAE Free Zone?

+

A free zone is a designated economic area in the UAE where foreign investors can own 100% of their business without needing a local sponsor. Free zones offer tax benefits, simplified regulations, and streamlined business setup processes.

How much does it cost to set up a business in a UAE Free Zone?

+

Costs vary significantly between free zones. The most affordable options start around AED 5,500-6,000 per year (Shams, UAQ, IFZA), while premium zones like DIFC can cost AED 50,000+. Most businesses spend AED 10,000-25,000 for their first year including visa costs.

Can I do business outside the free zone?

+

Free zone companies can trade internationally without restrictions. However, to sell directly to customers within the UAE mainland, you typically need a mainland license or a distributor. Some free zones now offer dual licensing options.

How long does it take to set up a Free Zone company?

+

Most free zones can issue your license within 1-5 business days. Newer zones like IFZA and Shams can process applications in 24-48 hours. The full process including visa takes 2-4 weeks.

Do I need to be in the UAE to set up a company?

+

You can start the application process remotely for most free zones. However, you will need to visit the UAE for biometrics (Emirates ID) and visa stamping if you're applying for a residence visa.

What's the difference between a Free Zone and Mainland company?

+

Free zone companies offer 100% foreign ownership, tax benefits, and fast setup, but have restrictions on trading within the UAE. Mainland companies can trade freely within the UAE but traditionally required a local sponsor (though recent reforms have relaxed this for many activities).

Do I need an office to get a Free Zone license?

+

Most free zones require at least a flexi desk or virtual office address. Some zones like Shams and Creative City Fujairah offer licenses without an office requirement for certain activity types. The cheapest option is usually a flexi desk starting around AED 3,000-5,000 per year.

Is there corporate tax in UAE Free Zones?

+

The UAE introduced a 9% corporate tax in 2023, but qualifying free zone companies can benefit from a 0% rate on qualifying income. The specifics depend on your activities and whether you meet the qualifying conditions set by the Ministry of Finance.
